Reviving Tennis in Pakistan after the Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has adversely affected the entire world - and sports is no exception. As the situation improved, thanks to a nationwide vaccination campaign, we finally decided to recommence sports activities.

Leading the revival of sports after the pandemic, Subh-e-Nau, an Environment, and Public Health Concern, organized two National Ranking Ladies' Tennis Tournaments in February 2022.Many national tennis stars including Sarah Mahboob, Noor Malik, Sheeza Sajid, Kainat Ali, and Meheq Khokhar participated in the events. The first tournament began on 1stFebruary 2022 at PTF Syed Dilawar Abbas Tennis Complex, Islamabad. The event was sponsored by ZTBL, Jubilee Insurance, WG Group of Companies, and Serena Hotels Pakistan. The final of this tournament was played on Friday, February 4th, 2022. Top ranking Sarah Mahboob Khan defeated Noor Malik by 6-1, 6-1 to clinch the Single's Title of Subh-e-Nau Ladies National Ranking Tournament 2022. Sarah, with Meheq Khokhar, also won the Double's Title in the same tournament. Sarah-Meheq duo beat Noor Malik and Amna Ali Qayyum by 6-1, 6-1. Amna Qayyum proved to be a rising tennis star bymwinning the Girls’ Under-14 title in the final against Zunaisha Noor by the score of 6-0, 6-3.


Senator Salim Saifullah Khan, the President Pakistan Tennis Federation was invited as the chief guest. He distributed the trophies and prizes to the winners. Chairperson Subh-e-Nau Shahida Kausar Farooq, Arshad Malik the Chairman of WG Group of Companies, and other renowned persons were also part of the final prize distribution ceremony.


Shahida Farooq lauded Pakistan Tennis Federation and the sponsors for their efforts to make this tournament happen. She said that such healthy activities are vital for women's empowerment in Pakistan. She also congratulated the winners and thanked all the players and officials.


The second SN tournament of the year began on 10thFebruary 2022 at Pakistan Sports Board Complex Tennis Courts, Islamabad. 16 women players participated in different categories of this 4-day-long event.


Sarah Mahboob Khan also won the second Subh-e-Nau Singles 'Title by defeating Noor Malik in the final played on Sunday, February 13th, 2022, at the Tennis Courts of PSB Sports Complex Islamabad. The veteran Sarah performed exceptionally well as she overpowered her young opponent Noor by 6-2, 6-2.


The tournament ended followed by a closing ceremony as Chairperson Subh-e-Nau distributed the prizes and certificates to the winners. She said that Subh-e-Nau has been working to promote women's sports in the country since the 1990s. “We have some highly talented players; all they need is a proper platform. Subh-e-Nau is working to provide them opportunities by holding such tournaments on regular basis”, Shahida Farooq said while addressing the participants. “COVID had forced us to halt sports activities for about a year. We're now determined to regularly organize similar events in the future as it'll help find young talented players”, she added.


The chairperson Subh-e-Nau thanked the Pakistan Tennis Federation and Pakistan Sports Board administrators for facilitating both events and announced that they will try to organize more tournaments for women and juniors soon.
