It is changing the way our rivers flow, altering rainfall patterns, increasing the frequency of devastating floods and droughts, intensifying heatwaves, worsening air pollution, reducing agricultural productivity, degrading biodiversity and placing immense pressure on our already limited water resources.
The evidence surrounds us. The catastrophic floods of 2022 displaced millions of people and damaged infrastructure across vast areas of the country. More recently, severe monsoonal flooding, intense heatwaves and prolonged dry spells have continued to remind us that climate change is no longer a future concern but a present-day reality affecting every province of Pakistan. Urban centres experience dangerous heat island effects, rural communities struggle with declining groundwater reserves, forests continue to disappear, and biodiversity that has supported our ecosystems for centuries is under increasing pressure.
These environmental crises should not be viewed as isolated problems. Floods, droughts, air pollution, declining rainfall, water scarcity, disappearing wildlife and degraded forests are interconnected symptoms of the same environmental imbalance. Solving one problem while ignoring the others will only provide temporary relief. Instead, Pakistan requires a comprehensive national strategy that recognizes the deep connections between climate, water, ecosystems and human well-being.

Choosing the right tree is just as important as planting one. Indigenous trees have evolved over thousands of years to thrive in Pakistan's climate and support local wildlife, soils and water cycles. They generally require less maintenance, are more resilient to local pests and diseases, conserve biodiversity and provide habitat for birds, pollinators and other beneficial organisms.
